Ameen Rihani (1876-1940)

Ameen Rihani, the son of a raw silk merchant, was born in Freike, Lebanon, in 1876, and at the ageof 11 was sent to America where he learned English.In 1895 he decided to become an actor and touredwith a Shakespearean theater troupe. Desiring a for-mal education, he attended New York Law School in1897. When a lung infection interrupted that course ofstudy, he went back to Lebanon to recuperate, wherehe relearned his native Arabic and began teachingEnglish. There he also studied classical Arabic litera-ture and culture.
