A demand by Australia that sewn leather car seat covers for export to Australia, from South Africa, be excluded from any benefits under South Africa's Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) from 2006, has succeeded. The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) has given in to Australian pressure following discussions between the two governments since late last year. The DTI's capitulation on leather is apparently to protect other elements of the country's motor industry, particularly other locally made components. In a release, the DTI said the MIDP was to 'undergo a review', starting in the first quarter of 2005 and ending in December 2006.
