Drought causes cattle herds to be reduced

Federally Inspected Slaughter for the period ending April 8, 2011, averaged 630,250 head/week against 638,000 in our previous report (a year earlier it was 623,500). The worst Texas drought for 44 years is forcing ranchers to reduce cattle herds due to damage of the state's wheat crop. Wheat futures rose 50% in the past year due to drought in Russia and the floods in Australia which hampered output.
