Based on their analysis of preliminary data, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) found in the "Law Enforcement Officer Deaths, Preliminary 2008 Report" that 140 officers died in the line of duty last year (as of mid-December), a reduction from 181 in 2007. If that figure is correct, that would mean that other than 1996 (when 139 officers were killed), 2008 would represent the year with the least officer fatalities since 1965, when 136 died in the line of duty.
