Chile launches CLP 6 billion Tarapaca fiberoptic and Wi-Fi tender

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel has published the conditions of a tender to expand fiber-optic coverage and Wi-Fi hotspots in the northern Tarapaca region. Under the terms of the public tender, a total of CLP 6.3 billion will be made available to roll out around 1,000 kilometers of fiber cables and install 41 Wi-Fi zones across 31 digital divide localities. The fiber deployment is part of the country's National Fiber Optic (FON) project first outlined by president Sebastian Pinera in May, while the hotspot installation is part of Subtel's ChileGob Wi-Fi program, allowing users to access the internet free of charge for 30 minutes.
