Straddling the 49th parallel at the Continental Divide, the CCE contains 43,700 square kilometers of Rocky Mountain landscape in northwestern Montana, southwestern Alberta, and southeastern British Columbia. More than 80 percent of the CCE is public property, including Glacier National Park and Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. Within this area is "one of the most intact assemblages of mammals of any region in southern Canada or the contiguous United States," including grizzly bears and other predators, as well as "the most diverse assortment of ungulates in North America" (24).
