摘要

The University of Washington Landscape Architecture Design/Build Program recently completed two undergraduate capstone projects in health care settings. The first project is a therapeutic play garden at a state residential school for individuals with developmental disabilities, the second an urban rooftop garden at a residential treatment facility for advanced-stage cancer patients. Both user groups cope with the cumulative effects of relocation to unfamiliar environments, separation from supportive networks, and feelings of isolation, depression, and fear. Student designers were confronted with these feelings in planning meetings with residents, staff, and volunteers. Out of such meetings they evolved the two main organizing concepts: "familiarity" and "escape."
