Most of Iran is high desert that looks a lot like West Texas. But in the north of the country there's a mild, humid region between the snowy Alborz Mountains and the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. With high rainfall and plenty of snowmelt, it's a place of streams, waterfalls, and lush deciduous forests full of maple, birch, dogwoods, oaks, and a stunning member of the witch hazel family, Parrotia persica.
