his io-acre garden at the Shanghai Botanical Garden is built with a deep affection for traditional Chinese landscape culture around a century-old quarry that lay abandoned. Every aspect of this project-the shaping of the terrain, the revegetation, the paths, and the inventive construction-revolves around the experience of visitors. The Quarry Garden has three main sections: a new lake that makes a mirror for the surrounding hillside, an elevated terrace above the lake retained by walls of stone and vivid Cor-Ten steel.
