Lake George Shoreline Stabilization

The City of Hobart, Indiana, received a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Lake and River Enhancement Program (LARE) in the summer of 2003 to develop designs for bioengineering shoreline stabilization measures in two public parks on Lake George, a 270-acre reservoir on the Deep River in Northwest Indiana. The lake is a centerpiece of the town, bordering prime commercial and residential property in the heart of the community. Jerry Pavese Park and the adjacent Boy Scout property on the north side of Lake George included 2,200 lineal feet of shoreline that had various levels of erosion including some 12-foot high cliffs with undercut embankments. Fred Rose Park has 5,400 feet of shoreline on the south side of Lake George and had similar embankments with eroded cliffs up to 15-feet in height.
