SUNSARI MORANG IRRIGATION PROJECT, NEPAL

The Sunsari Morang Irrigation Project is the largest government-operated surface water irrigation project on the Terai Plains in Nepal. Its operation has always been hampered by excessive sedimentation in the canal system and the inadequate conveyance capacity of the secondary river channel connecting the main river channel to the intake. Feasibility studies for headworks improvement and sediment removal works were commissioned to NEDECO in 1988. NEDECO assigned DHV Consultants (as leading partner) and Delft Hydraulics to provide the required expertise for the studies and entered into an association with Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. of Japan, a company with extensive experience of water resources development in Nepal. The subsequent detailed design and construction supervision phase started in 1993 and is being conducted by NEDECO (DHV Consultants BV) in association with the local firms SILT Consultants PVT. LTD. and TAEC Consult PVT. LTD. This article contains a detailed discussion of the project from the feasibility studies in 1988 through to the improvement works due for completion in 1996.
