FLOOD FORECASTING SYSTEM FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY OF EUROPEAN CITIZENS

Although the project is still in the research and development phase, customers are already showing interest: in 2002, WL I Delft Hydraulics won a bid to build an operational flood forecasting system for three regions in the United Kingdom. The EFFS is a synoptic early warning system, conceived to recognise possible flood threats all over Europe. By calculating the probability that an exceptional meteorological event will lead to critical rainfall somewhere in Europe within four to six days, the system can issue warnings to national or regional forecasting centres in the countries or regions most likely to be affected.
