Most people are aware that the world is experiencing aplastic crisis. Facts such as “one million plastic bottlesare sold across the world every minute” have beenwell publicised and the associated problems regardingbiodegradability and CO_2 emissions are becoming betterunderstood. But I doubt many people know that we have acoffee waste crisis on our hands as well.Indeed, six million tonnes of coffee waste is landfilledevery year. But while this product does biodegrade, it posesa different problem: methane emissions. The methane (agreenhouse gas) emitted from coffee waste alone adds up tothe equivalent emissions of 10 million cars. And methane is28 times more potent than CO_2.
