摘要

A correct testing method using miniature specimens smaller than those specified by the standard testing method for flexural strength of ceramics (JIS R 1601) was studied. It is clarificd that the edges of the miniature spccimens should be chamfered with l mu m diamond paste on a nylon cloth to eliminate machimng damage and that friction of the fixture must be reduced as smali as possible. The size cffect on strength of SiC miniature specimcns was examined with the improved testing method. The Weibull modulus for the miniature specimens of different sizes was almost constant regardless of the specimen size, but the average strength increased with decreasing the specimen size. The strengths of the SiC miniature specimens were evaluated successfully on the basis of Weibull size scaling with effective area.
