Attempts were made to develop a new coolant supply system to provide a coolant flow superimposed with the megasonic vibration in a grinding operation in order to improve grinding efficiency and ground surface quality, to increase grinding wheel life, and at the same time, to reduce the amount of grinding fluid needed for the operation. The authors have carried out research from the development of the ultrasonic vibration assisted coolant application nozzle to the application of the megasonic coolant method in general machining and in grinding. This paper deals with the construction of a suitable nozzle to superimpose ultrasonic vibration to the coolant before coming out of the nozzle, the coolant flow properties, the application of this megasonic coolant to observe its effect on groove grinding of an optical glass, and finally, the actual surface grinding of the SKD11 die steel to a mirror surface finish.
