Making Lahore Modern: Constructing and Imagining a Colonial City

Colonial discourse, as described by Edward Said's Orientalism, involved a kind of collusion between the colonizer and colonized in which the self-construction of the West and its equally fictional other, the non-West, were both framed by the desires and politics of Orientalism. Since Said, the question of how to responsibly articulate the colonial encounter, and its architecture, outside the Eurocentric, self-legitimating, Enlightenment-based tropes of Orientalism has assumed great importance.
