Two-Shaft Pick-Up Weave for Rugs

Most weavers are familiar with the construction of a double cloth and its decorative variation - Finnvaev, described in Quarterly Journals Nos 19 and 20. (Some illustrations of this weave appear in No. 13.) This latter pick-up technique needs a four-shaft loom; both warp and weft contribute to the surface of the cloth and there is a pocket between the two plain weave cloths. Although this is excellent for hangings and upholsteries it is not very suitable for floor rugs. The technique I will describe needs only a two-shaft loom; it is a weft-face weave, there is no pocket in its construction and it is very suitable for rugs. As in other types of double cloth the colours of the design are reversed on the back of the cloth.
