Ten eager students arrived feeling well-prepared for our day of tapestry weaving, as Stephanie had supplied us all in advance with useful notes and inspirational links to some fascinating websites. Judging by these and the gallery of samples that Stephanie put on show, it became clear that tapestry sits in the creative space between weaving and fine art. Stephanie uses abstracts from nature or the environment as her starting point. She explained how, for example, a leaf can become a landscape - or whatever the viewer decides. Examples on display included tapestries showing differing styles by both local and international weavers including Gill Lewis, Hillu Liebelt, weavers from the Wissa Wassef School in Egypt and weavers from Mexico. She also spoke about her recent visit to Peru to weave with Maximo Laura, whose work is symbolic of Peruvian culture.
