Back in the 1980s, Alison Daykin began to experiment with producing fancy or designer yarns, as they were then described. She wanted to produce yarns that were lively, interesting and colourful as well as being beautiful and practical. Initially working alone, Alison's skills grew with encouragement and guidance from spinner Mabel Ross and tutors at the Loughborough Summer School. During her inspirational two-day talk and workshop, Mid Essex Guild members learnt how various techniques and irregularities at different stages in processing could influence the look and handle of the yarn. She encouraged members to be daring, to break the rules and experiment - and consequently have fun.
