Poetic Cloth: Creating Meaning in Textile Art

For the textile artist, cloth can evoke a range of different meanings. In this book Hannah Lamb explores the connection between personal and sensory meaning of materials and a range of different techniques and processes. Part one looks at the significance of touch and the personal responses and memories connected with different fabrics. The author considers the nature of fibre and fabrics both natural and man-made, and some non-woven materials such as leather and paper. She emphasises that materials should be used with integrity and in the following chapters explores some of the practical methods of selecting and manipulating cloth, using examples from selected artists throughout. Part two concentrates on ways that stitch can be used to create marks on cloth as a means of expressing ideas. Part three explores how transparency and translucency in cloth can convey different moods, and the use of cyanotype to create blue prints on cloth. In part four Lamb considers fragments and the poetic qualities that can come from imperfections in cloth. Here techniques such as devore and burnout are explained. Part five explores mending and how techniques such as darning can add texture and detail, before moving on to the use of precious materials such as metallic threads and beads.
