Coventry grew to become one of the most important cities in England during the Middle Ages due to its booming woollen cloth and textiles trade. The traditional industry of Coventry, weaving and dyeing wool, declined and as early as 1627 the new industry of silk weaving appeared. Silk was originally woven on handlooms in weavers' houses, and by 1800 ribbon weaving had become important. As a result, Coventry was well placed to benefit from the Victorian ladies' fashion for dresses and bonnets decorated with ribbon trimmings and became the main centre of ribbon weaving in England.
