In January 2013, Irish food inspectors revealed that horsemeat was being used as a cheap supplement in ready-made supermarket meals throughout Europe. This discovery, along with recently reported outbreaks of food-borne illness, worldwide fluctuations in the prices of staple crops, and headlines revealing the anti-competitive behaviour of major agricultural producers, has exposed endemic bad practices in the industrial food supply chain. As a result, more people are engaging in a critical conversation about where their meals come from.
