Engaging Vulnerable Populations Using Participatory Mapping: Lessons Learned and Guidelines for Community Advocates and Transportation Planners

Participatory community mapping is an empowering approach to public engagement that can be deployed in a variety of social settings. This approach is used to understand the individual travel behavior of low-income populations through a pilot study. The paper describes the theoretical frameworks, the data-collection effort, and an analysis of the results. Furthermore, it describes the development of an online Web portal to help simplify and streamline data gathering that may assist in future transportation planning efforts.
