The Humane Metropolis is an edited volume of 24 papers from a 2002 conference of the same name. Primarily aimed at a North American context, it discusses how cities may be developed sustainably and the qualities of people place interactions that are afforded by urban locations. The central premise of the book is to update and extend the work of William (Holly) Whyte in exploring the potential of human habitation, both in the infrastructure and detail of city environments.
