摘要

Since the 1970s, women and gender have had a complex relationship with urban planning and architecture. From then until now, women have played an important role as social reformers; however, history continues to deny or acknowledge the important work women have undertaken, and their impact on the built environment has been consistently undervalued or ignored. Despite improvements on gender issues, there are still a lot of unanswered questions to address. Some of these questions relate to the roles women play as carers and mothers, as well as disagreements between different feminist movements such as that between feminists of difference and feminists of equality. Engendering Cities emerges within this context and intends to establish a discursive environment to answer these questions. The book is thus an attempt to make visible women's complex reality in different countries around the world in order to rethink the design of domestic space and the public sphere.
