this paper presents the results of a study examining the inĔuence of residential location onntravel behavior in theHangzhouMetropolitan Area, China.ăe location of the dwelling relative to thencenter hierarchy of themetropolitan area is found to exert a considerable inĔuence on the travel behaviornof the respondents. On average, living close to the center ofHangzhou contributes to less overall travel,na higher proportion of trips by bicycle and on foot, and lower consumption of energy for transport.nĂe location of the dwelling relative to the closest second-order and third-order center also inĔuencesntravel, but not to the same extent as proximity to the city center.ăese geographical differences in travelnbehavior are independent of residential preferences and of attitudes toward transport and environmentalnissues, and therefore cannot be explained by residential self-selection.
