Ottoman Izmir. The Rise of a Cosmopolitan Port, 1840-1880

Zandi-Sayek's book is a rewarding example of a cultural approach to urban history. The author studies the transformation in the central decades of the nineteenth century of the Ottoman city of Izmir (Smyrne) in relation to it becoming a cosmopolitan port. Regarding the history of transport, her book is interesting as it shows how changing patterns in transport, such as the increase in naval transport of goods or developments in shipping technology, are closely intertwined with phenomena such as social change and transformations of urban space.
