Most Olympic dreams are descriptions of successful athletes overcoming great difficulties to enjoy their richly deserved place on a podium. But none of this drama could unfold without the ambition, vision, inspiration, dedication, planning, preparation and implementation of thousands of people behind the scenes. The modern Olympics and Paralympics is now much more than a two month sporting spectacle as, handled successfully, it can bestow a huge improved image and prestige for the host city and nation and provide a lasting legacy in many areas for future generations to enjoy. In this text, Eva Kassens-Noor questions the true legacy of five host cities, which claim to have used the Olympic Games as a way to progress their urban policies.
