OBJECTIVE: To clarify the differences in clinical features and treatments of prostate cancer among 12rninstitutions, including The Jikei University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals, we examined the results ofrnprostate needle biopsy and the therapeutic strategy for newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer to standardizernthe method of diagnosis and treatment.rnMETHODS: The results of prostate needle biopsy and the therapeutic strategy for newly diagnosed prostaterncancer in 2007 were compared among the institutions.rnRESULTS: A total of 1590 transrectal prostate needle biopsies were performed and 682 cases (42.9%) ofrnprostate cancer were diagnosed. A total of 819 patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer were treated. Ofrnthese patients, 275 (33.6%) were treated with hormonal therapy, 243 (29.7%) were treated with radicalrnprostatectomy;RP and 218 (26.6%) were treated with radiotherapy.rnCONCLUSION: The survey suggests that the patient characteristics and therapeutic strategies differrnsomewhat among 12 institutions.rnFurther investigation is required regarding whether the difference in therapeutic strategy affects outcomes.%平成24年3月31日で東京慈恵会医科大学教授を定年退任するにあたり，退任記念講義を行う機会を与えられた.この講義では，なぜ私が生理学の道を選んだのか，生理学者としてどのような研究をしたのかについて話した.この小論は退任記念講義で話した私が生理学を目指した経緯と，おもな研究成果の一部をまとめたものである.
