PROFESSOR LIVIU LIBRESCU-PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS

I first met Professor Liviu Librescu during a Euro-mechanics Colloquium on refined mathematical models of thin-walled structures and their applications, held in Kassel, Germany, from 23 to 26 September 1986 [I. Elishakoff and H. Irretier, eds., Lecture Notes in Engineering: Refined Theories on Beams, Plates and Shells and their Applications, Proc. Euromech-Colloq. 219, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, 1987]. Many of the internationally dominant at the time figures of the subject were present in that meeting and Liviu was one of them. He was the first one to approach me after the end of session D, which included my talk, and with his comment passed over to me the fluttering boost that an established researcher can naturally give to a developing colleague.
