Biographical sketch of Alan Needleman (2007)

Alan Needleman was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended the University of Pennsylvania graduating with a Bachelor degree in 1966. He did his graduate work at Harvard and received his MS in 1967 and completed his Ph.D. in 1970, under the supervision of Prof. John Hutchinson. It was during this period that Alan began to develop his lifelong interest in scientific computing as applied to problems in solid mechanics. His thesis dealt with large strain aspects of void growth in ductile elastic-plastic solids. Among his thesis contributions were the development of a fundamentally sound finite strain finite element code for nonlinear plane strain deformations and the use of periodic boundary conditions to represent periodic arrays of voids.
