摘要

Following Boerner's Atlas of Science: Visualizing What We Know (2010), this is the second in what will be a three-volume encyclopedia of techniques for mapping science and technology. Science is construed broadly to include data from the social sciences and the humanities; technology includes patents. The maps, for the most part computer-produced, are mainly information visualizations of bibliometric or scientometric data. That is, their structures were chosen by mappers rather than being inherent in nature (Munzner, 2008). Some, however, are scientific visualizations of findings with real physicality or geographic coordinates, such as brain tissue or whale density in Massachusetts Bay.
