Sandwich Complexes of the Metalloaromatic η3-Al_3R_3 Ligand

The aromaticity of the [Al_3R_3]~(2-) three-membered dianion ring has recently been put forward by Power and co-workers1 by means of their remarkable synthesis of the Na_2[Al_3R_3] (R = 2,6-dimesitylphenyl) complex. Examination of the calculated valence molecular orbitals (MOs) revealed an occupied π-type orbital delocalized over the three aluminum atoms, which led them to state that Na_2[Al_3R_3] is aromatic, in accordance with Hiickel's 4n + 2 rule.
