Dynamic Intracomplex Heterogeneity of Phytochrome

Phytochromes are photoreceptors in plants, bacteria, and fungi. They control a variety of light-regulated processes, e.g., germination, photomorphogenesis, and flowering of plants. The phytochrome function is based on the interplay of two protein parts, a sensing (receptor) module, and a signaling module (kinase). The photoactive module reacts on light with conformational changes of its covalently bound open chain tetrapyrrole chromophore.
