I must confess to being rather bemused after reading the paper 'Mechanism of Fish Oil Tanning' by Zhou et al., (Vol. 95 No. 6 p.250).The authors appear to be attempting to make chamois by treating the skins with oxidised fish oil and conclude that no tanning takes place. I do not ever recollect anyone suggesting that it would. They seem to completely miss the point that oil tannage takes place by oxidising the oil in situ with the skins, not oxidising the oil externally and then applying it.
