A description of the colorimetric properties of a Rank Brimar high-brightness large-screen video projector using a Texas Instruments Digital Micromirror Device™ (DMD)-based system is presented. Dichroic surfaces are used to split white light into three primary colors which illuminate three separate DMDs. The modulated reflected light is then recombined through dichroics to produce a projected image in full color. Employing common dichroics for both the illuminating and reflecting beams provides not only economy in cost and space, but enhanced colorimetry performance due to the differing angles between illuminating and imaging beams incident upon the dichroic surfaces.
