On the Methodological Strategies of Classical and Nonclassical Psychology

D.B. Elkonin pointed out thatVygotsky demonstrated the possibility of turning psychology into a science of a new, nonclassical type, in which the object of psychological research focuses on the processes of development, and its method becomes the modeling of developmental processes under experimental conditions. Elkonin's theory of development views the unity of two opposing tendencies-the child's self-sufficiency related to emancipation from the adu and the tendency toward a union with the adult-a striving for a collaborative life with adults, which serves as the driving force in a child's mental development.
