The terms of reference have received a minor revision this year. The methodological focus is now stated more explicitly: 'Series C promotes papers that are focused on statistical methods for real life problems'. This statement is intended to distinguish Series C from Series A of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, for which it is now stated that 'methodology per se should not be the main focus' of papers. Both Series A and Series C have a focus on applications (more so than Series B) and we stress that there is no intention to diminish in any way the centrality of applications in papers in Series C nor to imply any change of emphasis on methodology. We continue to view applications as 'central to papers, rather than illustrative, to motivate the work and to justify any methodological developments' and failure to satisfy this criterion remains the most common reason why submissions to Series C are turned down. As for Series A, there is no restriction on the subject-matter of the applications in papers in Series C.
