Talking to engineers—colleagues in my working environment—I often perceive a big mismatch between the ideas of engineers and those of statisticians about the value and relevance of statistics. Whereas statisticians of course highlight the relevance of the subject to all aspects of scientific discovery and analysis and reduction of variability (as visible in 'six sigma' programmes), many engineers seem to have been trained initially about coins, dice etc.
