Now in its third edition, this book sets out a wide ranging and detailed overview of South Asia's shifting geopolitical regimes and their rootedness in the land, the people, the religions and societies of the region. A product of nearly forty years of Chapman's scholarly interest in India and South Asia, this remains a hugely ambitious undertaking and one, the author laments in the opening pages, that is unlikely to be repeated in an era of the output-driven Research Assessment Exercise and its successors. And yet with increased international attention being directed towards South Asia - to India as an emerging economic powerhouse, to Pakistan and Afghanistan as crucial sites in the so-called 'War on Terror", and to Bangladesh as a kind of global 'litmus test' for global warming and sea-level rises - this third edition of The Geopolitics of South Asia is both an important and timely intervention, and is worthy of critical engagement.
