British Diplomacy in Turkey,1583 to the Present, a Study in the Evolution of the Resident Embassy

Professor G.R. Berridge has proven again his adeptness at reporting on historical events in his latest publication British Diplomacy in Turkey, 1583 to the Present, A study in the evolution of the resident embassy. Two of his previous publications, Gerald Fitzmaurice (1865-1939), Chief Dragoman of the British Embassy in Turkey (Leiden, 2007), which I reviewed in the April 2009 JRAS (Volume 19, Part 2), and Tilkidom and the Ottoman Empire: The Letters of Gerald Fitzmaurice to George Lloyd, 1906-15 (Istanbul, 2008), focused on Gerald Fitzmaurice, who was one of the final First Dragomans at the British embassy in Constantinople. In his latest release, he provides a satisfying and broad perspective on the operation of the British embassy in Turkey from inception to the present.
