This volume comes out of the inaugural conference in January 2010 in New Delhi on the theme Rethinking Religion in India. Possibly Routledge has been generous in including a seminar style volume in their new series rather than a monograph, for many of the essays overlap and several are but early drafts of work-in-progress. The basic questions addressed 'is Hinduism as a religion nothing but a western invention?', 'does Hinduism even exist as a religion?', seemingly fly in the face of all commonsense.
