Matrimonial Strategies and Identity Relations between Palestinian Refugees and Lebanese after the Lebanese Civil War

Relationships between matrimonial ties and identity can be analysed at various levels. In this paper, the author addresses this issue in post-civil-war Lebanon with regard to the Palestinian refugee case, considering on the one hand official pronouncements (laws, rules, norms) and, on the other hand, the statements of social actors which give a more general understanding of the phenomenon. In the first part, the author demonstrates the impact of Lebanese and Palestinian shared history on the sense of belonging as well as on the dynamics of intermarriage that remain very contrasted. In the second part, he gives a general overview of issues related to the presence of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in the post-civil-war period, and examines narrative registers used by the Lebanese–Palestinian couples in the third part. In the last part, the author tries to evaluate some collective determination of actors’ choice in such marriages.
