Border Union Dream: the inside story of Britain's boldest preservation bid

Placid canals have been preserved at torrential speed in comparison with the tranquil nature of railway preservation which literally tends to go nowhere, or not very far. The North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway is the sole exception and the Border Union Railway just might have been a standard-gauge companion. The reopening of the railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank owes little to the earlier saga and tragically Hawick still remains the most significant town in mainland Britain to lack a train service. The main textual content is an account of the Border Union Railway Company's attempt to restore the train service between Edinburgh and Carlisle after closure had taken place but before too much damage to the infrastructure took place. In retrospect this looks like a David and Goliath contest where David's dream was shattered by state bureaucracy with the actions of the Scottish Region's General Manager Gordon Stewart acting promptly to quell any chance of reprieve. The photographs show the residual freight service to Hawick which lasted for a few more months and track lifting south of Hawick, which began promptly. There is a good index to record the melancholy Balkanisation of Hawick.
