Those who have read Joan Tucker's Ferries of Gloucestershire will know what to expect: immaculate research for the text and interesting and varied illustrations. This time she has chosen a far bigger subject, the ferries of the Thames between Staines and Yantley Creek near Gravesend. This is the section of the river that was sold by the cash-strapped Richard I to the City of London in 1197. In the upper reaches, above Chiswick, ferries were mostly conventional, running directly from one bank to the other, and largely replaced following the busy bridge construction years of the 18th century.
