'Northern Northumberland' is defined as the Berwick and Alnwick districts of the county Both are predominantly rural, so one would expect them to contain only a handful of railways. In fact this book describes over thirty, and there are three more volumes to follow! In this volume they range in size from 100 yards to three miles, their construction from the 1840s to the 1980s and period of use from a few days to 100 years. Haulage was by man, horse, locomotive, tractor, gravity and self-propulsion. Two are still in use, the Heatherslaw Light Railway for tourists and a military target railway where public access is prohibited.
