Directory of the Railway Companies of Great Britain

The author records railway companies created in Great Britain (and also, unlike similar works, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands), presumably up to the grouping (HS1 is not included). Defining exactly what comprises a 'railway' is an obvious difficulty. For example, the author excludes municipal street tramways, also industrial systems unconnected to the main system, but includes certain non-statutory lines which affected the greater picture. He also clearly excludes even statutory joint committees if these did not result in line construction.
