Hagiography, originally meaning the biography of a saint, is the bane of anyone teaching the history of invention. Some teachers may have had my experience of being approached by a student with a mischievous look and the pronouncement "You know it was Tesla and not Marconi who invented radio." The statement is so wrong that I scarcely know how to deal with it, but I can probably trace its hagiographic origins.Gary Frost's important contribution will be a surprise to anyone who has attempted to study or teach the history of FM radio because it establishes that we too have been gulled by hagiography.
