Sam Coleman, the editor of the special section "Social Work in the Great Recession," is to be commended, for in addition to the section itself, he found a wonderful 1933 article by a social worker, June Purcell Guild, entitled "The Social Worker and the Depression."What a profound voice as she speaks to us from many decades ago about a nation that is not at all different today:The United States leads the world in the number and activities of its gangsters, racketeers, and social workers. It has the highest murder rate and owns the most motor cars. (p. 50)
