摘要

Popular journalism such as Jason DeParle's 2005 book American Dream (which detailed how welfare reform's success in moving women from welfare to the low-wage labor market did not greatly improve the circumstances of these women and their families) can be enormously influential in helping non-academics understand basic economic processes and key effects. Such popular books can be enormously helpful to all who are not economists by stating and re-stating in simple language the key economic effects and interactions with social policy in ways that acknowledge key assumptions and show where these assumptions may be unmerited. Barbara Garson's Down the Up Escalator: How the 99 Percent Live in the Great Recession, is an important addition to this genre that will be useful to social workers, progressive activists, and all those who question the assertions and claims of both political parties regarding where the U. S. economy is headed and how it is getting there.
